Friday 7th December - Issue 89

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

In this Sunday’s gospel we will hear how John the Baptist encouraged people to change their hearts and prepare for the coming of Jesus. As we celebrate the second Sunday of Advent, we too can prepare our hearts to receive Christ and so experience and share more of God’s love. Christmas is a time for love, kindness and charity - values that we uphold and encourage at St. Edward’s.

This Sunday from 7pm-9pm our Year 4 children will be performing at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Marylebone singing some festive songs. Cerys Matthews will be joining them as well as a host of other singers. It is always a wonderful evening, I look forward to seeing you there.

Our KS2 children will be celebrating Advent Mass at Our Lady’s, Lisson Grove with Fr. Jeff on Monday at 10:00am. Parents are more than welcome to join us at this special Mass.

On Wednesday we enjoyed a very special Nativity performed by our Nursery and Reception children. Everyone who saw the play was amazed at how beautifully the children acted and sang. I am so proud of the our youngest children for displaying such talent and skill - they conveyed the true meaning of Christmas in the most heartwarming and wonderful way! A big thank you to our EYFS staff team who prepared the stage and rehearsed with the children - the hard work definitely paid off! We now look forward to seeing the KS1 Christmas production on Tuesday 11th December at 9:30am - families and friends of children in class 3 and 4 are warmly invited to come along and watch the performance. Our KS2 Carol Concert will be taking place on Monday 17th at Our Lady’s at 2:00pm . A reminder that pictures/videos taken at Christmas performances are for personal use only and should not be shared on social media - thank you.

Our PTA will be selling delicious edible Christmas goodies again next Friday. This has proven to be very popular indeed. Please keep a look out for them in the playground after school. Your tremendous support is greatly appreciated and, as always, all funds raised will be benefiting the children of St. Edward’s.

Next Friday the 14th December we will be joining thousands of other people across the UK by wearing our Christmas jumpers to school to do our bit for charity. Please bring £1 and have some festive fun - all donations will be going to ‘Save the Children’ who help children all around the world to have a better future.

Is not too late to book a seat at our PTA’s Christmas pantomime ‘Beauty and the Beast’ happening on the 18th December 3:30 - 4:30pm. This promises to be a fun filled afternoon for our children. Please return slip and payment to the school office as soon as possible.

Our School Council in the kitchen!

Today our school council met with Neil Price, our school cook. They chatted to him about the menu, ingredients and recipes that he uses to make our lovely school lunches. The school council represented their respective classes by asking questions and putting forward suggestions from their class mates. They also got to take part in a food tasting session. They tried many vegetarian options for the Spring term including Bean Enchiladas and cheese twists! They really enjoyed the opportunity to have a say in the meals that are prepared for them.

In Year 5, we have enjoyed learning more about Advent and eagerly anticipating Christmas and the celebration of  Jesus's birth.

We reflected on what it is like to wait, making links and connections with the arrival of Christmas.  We discussed and studied the significance of the Advent Wreath for Christians and wrote a guide on how to use it.  Our acrostic poems reflected  the importance of waiting in hope.  In the next two weeks we will retell the feelings of Mary at the Annunciation and evaluate how her being chosen as Jesus's mother has such significance for her and for the Catholic community as a whole. This topic has given children a wonderful opportunity to look forward, during Advent, to the coming of the Lord.
