Friday 3rd March - Issue 21

Dear parents, carers and children,

On Wednesday we began the season of Lent. Father Lorenzo went into every class from Nursery to Year 2 and talked about Lent and the importance of Ash Wednesday, children then received ashes. Mass was held for KS2 in the Top Hall. Thank you to Father Lorenzo for visiting our school and helping us to start our preparations for Easter.

Our whole school had lots of fun dressing up as our favourite book characters on Thursday, there were so many delightful and imaginative costumes!  We enjoyed a fantastic assembly by class 12 which highlighted how important it is for us all to read and how much enjoyment we can all get out of reading a good book.

On Monday 20th March, we are holding a Nursery open day, we welcome any parents who have children who will be starting Nursery in September 2017 to come and visit our Nursery between 9:30-10:30. You will have an opportunity to see the fantastic learning that takes place and meet the Nursery team.

For parents who wish to build their confidence and skills in the English language, St. Edward's will  be hosting an ESOL course starting on the 8th March for four weeks on Wednesdays from 9:00am till 11:30am. Westminster Adult Education Services are offering the course free of charge to all parents who speak English as a second language and who feel that they would benefit from improving their English.  Please contact the school office for further details and to register.

Lastly, I wish to mention how important it is for all children to complete the homework which is set by class teachers each week, learn their spellings and to read every day.  Please ensure that reading records are signed and a comment added every day.  All children have been given a Mathletics username and password with which they can access Mathletics and I strongly encourage all children to make full use of this great resource.

Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Best wishes,

Miss O'Connor

Lent is a time when, for our own good, God calls us to make a special effort - perhaps to give something up or to do something loving and good.

Well done to classes 1, 3 and 6 for achieving 98.9% and an extra special well done to classes 10 and 13 for 100% attendance this week!

St. Edward's Greening Project

You may remember how lovely our playground looked last summer and with spring approaching, we are looking forward to replanting colourful flowers and vegetables in our green planters that are dotted all around our playground.  The planters have been very generously gifted to our school by Westminster Communities Homes and we wish to thank them for their very kind donation and support.  The planters have made such a big difference to our playground by making it a greener and more beautiful environment in which we can enjoy our breaktimes!

Class 12's Assembly

Class 12's assembly was a celebration of books, reading, authors and illustrators!  We heard that every year countries all over the world celebrate World Book Day with activities such as read- a-thons, dressing up and book swaps!  Class 12 shared with us some of their favourite books and how reading a good book makes them feel.  We should make very day World Book Day!  Thank you class 12 for a brilliant assembly!

World Book Day

Yesterday our school was invaded by literary characters of all kinds! We saw Alice, Paddington Bear, the Tiger who came to tea, the Queen of Hearts, Bob the Builder, Princesses, Superheroes and many more!  It was fantastic to see our children and staff so excited about World Book Day and we all enjoyed wearing our outfits and talking about our favourite books!

Children also enjoyed a day filled with literary activities and class teachers visited different classes for a whole school reading session.  I hope our children will enjoy reading the books they buy with the book tokens they received!

It is wonderful to see the large majority of our children dressed smartly in their uniform!  A gentle reminder that a tie and the school coat with logo are compulsory items of uniform and must be worn.  Black school shoes only are allowed and not trainers.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Congratulations to all children who received certificates at this morning's achievement assembly!
