Friday 24th February - Issue 20

Dear parents, carers and children,

It is lovely to see all our children back from the half term break and it is almost unbelievable to think that we are half way through this academic year!

Myself, teachers and support staff are very pleased to see the progress that our children have made so far and the hard work and effort that they have put into their learning.  It was a pleasure to share this with parents who attended the parents' evenings this week.  If you were unable to see your child's teacher, please speak with them directly to arrange a convenient time to catch up or contact the school office.

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and marks the start of Lent; a time of prayer, fasting and charity in preparation for Easter.  We can all start preparing by thinking about our Lenten Promises to help us become closer to Jesus this Easter.  This year at St. Edward's we will be focusing on 'doing rather than giving' and it is the perfect time for us all to reflect on ways in which we can contribute in a positive way to our families, school and wider community.  Fr. Lorenzo will be visiting us to celebrate Mass with KS2 at 1:30 pm and will then distribute the Ashes to the classes in KS1.  Parents are welcome to join us for mass in the top hall.

Reading to our children and encouraging them to read themselves not only helps broaden vocabulary, but also develops imagination and creativity and so on Thursday we will be celebrating World Book Day.  We have lots of exciting activities arranged for the day which will hopefully ignite a passion for reading and inspire us all to read more often.  Best of all, we will be dressing up as our favourite book characters and I am eagerly looking forward to seeing some interesting costumes.  Visit the World Book Day website for some inexpensive ideas.

Letters for after school clubs were sent home this week and spaces do fill up very quickly, so if you have not signed your child up for a club and you still wish to do so, please speak to Mrs Gashi & Mrs Skilton to check if there is any availability.

We are very fortunate to have a dedicated and motivated PTA at St. Edward's and they work tirelessly to organise various events for us all to enjoy.  The next big event we are looking forward to is our popular 'World on a Plate Day' which will be taking place on Friday 24th March.  This is a day where we celebrate the diversity of cultures represented at our wonderful school!  Not only do we get together and enjoy delicious food from around the world, but we get to take part in different activities and wear colourful national costumes.  If you are able to assist in any way, whether it be helping on the day, bringing in food or arranging donations, please contact a member of the PTA committee or let the school office know.  Further details can be found on our PTA noticeboard situated by class 4.  Please look out for further information in future newsletters and for dates of PTA meetings.

I would like to draw your attention to an important letter from the School Nursing Services which you will find elsewhere in this newsletter.  The service is being transferred to a new provider and the letter has further details for parents.

Also, we will be hosting a ESOL course for parents who have English as a second language. It is a four week programme run by Westminster Adult Education, starting on Wednesday 8th March and is free of charge.  If you are interested please contact the school office.  More details can be found below.

Lastly, our term dates for the 2017/18 academic year are now available.  I urge you to consult these dates before you book your holidays as term time holidays can not be authorised.  I am very grateful for your cooperation on this matter.

Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Best wishes,

Miss O'Connor

Year 3 & 4 Football Festival

On Wednesday a team of year 3 and 4 children attended a football festival organised by QPR.

'Our day started when we arrived at the Capital City Academy in Willesden.  We then had an introduction from the QPR scouts.  Unfortunately, we had to wait 15 to 30 minutes between each match!  We wre so excited when we stepped on the pitch.  We won 1 game and lost the rest!  At the end of the day, 2 of our team mates were awarded medals.  Lujine got a medal for team mate of the day and Tyler got a medal for goal of the day.'  by Jamie.

Congratulations to all the children who received achievement certificates at this morning's assembly!
