Friday 10th March - Issue 22

Dear parents, carers and children,

The safety and well being of our children is of the utmost importance at St. Edward's  and it is the responsibility of everyone who is part of our school community to make sure that our children are kept safe and happy.  I wish to remind children not to talk to passersby through the school fence, even if they know the person.  Likewise, I ask parents/other family members please not to approach and talk to children at the fence when they are out at break times. I trust that I will have your full cooperation on this matter. Thank you.

After a long wait, our year 6 children have now received their secondary school offers and parents have to submit their acceptances by the 15th March.  Parents who wish to discuss the outcomes of their applications must please come and see either myself or Mrs Moon.

I am sure many of you have seen the recent news reports about the poor air quality in London and the increased risk of pollution, especially from busy roads like Marylebone Road.  Our school council have joined up with Westminster Council to help make our environment a healthier one and we need some parent volunteers!  Please see below for details on how you can help our school council's project.

Our PTA will be meeting on Wednesday 15th March at 9:00am in the bottom hall to finalise details for our 'World on a plate' Day which is being held on Friday 24th March.  Extra help is always welcome, so if you have some spare time please come along and join our PTA to make this event a successful and enjoyable time!

Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Best wishes,

Miss O'Connor

No Idling Campaign

Our school council have been thinking this term about air pollution around our school and have been trying to come up with ways to make our school a healthier environment.  We have been lucky enough to become involved with a Westminster project to try and decrease the amount of traffic fumes caused by idling and will be the first school running a 'no idling' day on Wednesday 15th March.

We would like to ask parents and children to volunteer to raise awareness with drivers who are idling in the area around our school.  Parents will be given training beforehand so they know what their expectation is, and we would ask them to collect their child and then in the hi-vis jackets speak to the drivers of vehicles that are stopped with their engines still running.

If you feel you are able to help, or are interested in finding out more to support this initiative, there will be the opportunity to speak to John Matthews, a member of the Westminster team committed to taking action on this, on Monday 13th March after school.

Own Clothes Day

Friday 17th March - children are invited to wear their own clothes in return for a donation for their class hamper.  The hampers will be put up for raffle at our 'World on a Plate Day'.

Year groups will be collecting the following items:

Nursery - Italian

Year 1 - Movie Night

Year 2  - Chocolate

Year 3 - Afternoon Tea

Year 4 -  Bake Sale

Year 5 -  French

Class 11 's Assembly

It was class 11's turn to present what they have been learning in RE. What an amazing assembly it was!  Mr.Pilles and his class clearly worked very hard to put this together.  They presented what they had learned throughout their Eucharist unit and then began to remind the rest of the school what they will be getting into soon with their Lent topics.

Animals visit St. Edward's!

Our top hall was transformed into a mini zoo this week when our Reception and Year 1 children had a delightful visit from different animals!  The children were very excited to learn about and see a variety of animals.  We saw a lizard, a spider, a snake, skunk, tortoise and meerkats.  It was interesting to learn lots of facts and to get close to the animals.  We had a wonderful time!

Bright Sparks at Latymer Upper School

Please see below for an opportunity for Year 5 students to attend a taster programme at Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith.

Football at Paddington Recreation Ground

A team of year 4 children played football against other Westminster schools on Tuesday.

Here are the results:

St. Edward's vs. Barrow Hill: 3 - 0

St. Edward's vs. St. Mary's of the Angels: 4 - 0

St. Edward's vs. All Souls: 6 - 0

We also played a friendly against St. Mary's of the Angels and beat them 7 - 0!  We are very proud of our team as not only did they perform extremely well, they also displayed excellent sportsmanship on and off the pitch!  Thank you to Mr Abbas for coaching the team and for the parents who accompanied the children on their outing.

St. Edward's vs Christchurch Bentinck Football

We were very pleased to be able to host a friendly football match against Christchurch Bentinck on Wednesday.  Our girls and boys football teams played really well and put on a fantastic sporting performance.  It is great to be able to strengthen our sporting connections with other local schools and we look forward to welcoming more teams to St. Edward's in the near future.
