Friday 13th January - Issue 15

HEADTEACHER'S MESSAGE

Dear parents, carers and children,

Despite travel disruption and a little bit of snow, we have had a very busy and eventful week at St. Edward's.  Our year 6 children visited the Transport Museum where they participated in Citizenship activities and Year 3 enjoyed a trip to the National Portrait Gallery where they practised their sketching and drawing skills.  On the sporting front, our Year 4 children started cricket with coaches from MCC Lord's today and we are very proud of our Year 6 boys football team who excelled at the annual Chelsea u11's football tournament on Wednesday. Thank you to our parent volunteers who accompanied our children and staff on the these trips. Without your help these valuable learning opportunities would not be able to take place.

We look forward to a jam packed week to come as we have a representative from the NSPCC visiting on Monday for a special assembly  and further NSPCC activities are arranged for the rest of the week (details to follow), Team GB boxer and gold medallist Hannah Beharry will be holding a 'Be the best you can be' assembly and workshops with our children on Wednesday and class 6 is hosting the weekly class assembly on Thursday.

A gentle reminder, with the very cold weather we are experiencing, to please ensure children are wearing their school coats and have hats, scarves and gloves.  Please make sure that all items are clearly labeled.

Below you will find the links to access photos and videos of the various Christmas plays and productions that were held at the end of last term.  Thank you to Mr Wu for the wonderful pictures.  I am sure they will be enjoyed by all!

At St. Edward's we are fortunate to have close links with businesses in our local area and I wish to say a very big thank you to Firebrand Pizza, Lisson Grove who very generously donated the most delicious pizzas for our staff end of year function.  Elsewhere in the newsletter you will find details of special deals available to parents that Firebrand Pizza are promoting this January.

I hope you have a lovely weekend and remember to wrap up warm!

Best wishes,

Miss O'Connor

NOTICES AND REMINDERS

CLASS 7'S ASSEMBLY

On Thursday morning Class 7 started the year with a class assembly all about their RE Topic of Journeys.  They told us how the Church journeys through a calendar of seasons and special times called the Liturgical Year.  Sometimes we are celebrating but sometimes we are in Ordinary Time.  They also told us about the things a Christian might do on their life's journey. They finished with a favourite hymn 'One more step along the world we go' to remember that God is always with us on our Journey.

Well done class 7 on a brilliant assembly and thank you to all class 7 parents who were able to come along and enjoy the morning with us!

YEAR 6 VISIT THE TRANSPORT MUSEUM

Today Year 6 eventually managed to visit the Transport Museum after they had to postpone their trip on Monday due to the Tube Strike.  They participated in several different Citizenship Activities which has equipped them with the skills and knowledge to help them one step further on their journey to becoming independent and responsible young people.

YEAR 3's TRIP TO THE NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY

Our year 3 children had a very interesting time at the National Portrait Gallery.  Once again, thank you to all the parents who were able to accompany the classes.

RECEPTION PLACES FOR SEPTEMBER 2017

If your child is born between 1st September 2012 and 31st August 2013, they will begin Reception in September 2017.  Parents must complete the school's Supplementary Information Form (SIF).  Paper copies are available from the school office and electronic copies are available here, on our website.  For more information please contact the school.

Supplementary Information Form -  download

Certificate of Catholic Practice - download

You must also complete the form on the EAdmissions website.

The closing date for applications is this Sunday the 15th January 2017.

BIRTHDAY CAKES

We appreciate that parents and children enjoy celebrating and sharing their birthdays with classmates and staff but, due to health and safety and the number of our children who suffer from allergies, we are unable to distribute cake at school.  Parents are still more that welcome to make up party packs with small items of stationery, toys, puzzles etc. but, please do not bring cakes, cupcakes or doughnuts into school for staff to hand out in class.  I appreciate your understanding and cooperation on this matter.

LOST PROPERTY

We are only 2 weeks into the new term and already there are quite a few items in our lost property box. If your child has lost any item of uniform, please check the lost property box which is outside the KS2 doors.  Please label all items of uniform clearly.

SCHOOL DINNERS

A gentle reminder that the school office needs to be informed if your child is changing from a school dinner to a packed lunch or vice versa with 2 weeks notice.  We are not able to accommodate meal changes on a daily basis as this makes it difficult for the school kitchen to order and prepare the correct amount of food.  Thank you for your co-operation.

The cost of school meals is £9.50 per week unless your child is in receipt of Free School Meals or in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.  If you regularly have a school dinner on Fridays, you must pay the Friday before.  Please pay for school meals at the front office.

ATTENDANCE DISCO

A special disco will be held on the 27th January for those children who have achieved outstanding attendance and received a certificate at December's Achievement Assembly.  The children with 99%/100% attendance must come to school dressed in school uniform and bring a change of clothes for the disco.

MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition...Do it!)

MEND have been working with our year 1 and year 4 children and parents over the last term and they are now inviting families from across the school to join them at a family workshop on Thursday 19th January 3:30-4:30pm.  Mend empowers children and adults to become more fit, healthier and happier by making healthy choices and behaviour changes as a family.  The MEND workshop will cover healthy eating, nutrition, active play and more.

PHOTOS AND VIDEOS OF CHRISTMAS PLAYS

Please find links to all the Christmas Plays that took place towards the end of last term.  I hope you enjoy the beautiful pictures and once again I wish to extend my gratitude to Mr Wu for his time and hard work.

SPORT

On Wednesday the year 6 football team were invited to the annual Chelsea FC u11's football tournament at Southfields Academy to compete against other schools from the London area.  It was a very busy day with over 40 schools attending.  We had 8 teams in our group and our boys did amazingly well losing 2 matches, drawing 2 and winning 3 of their matches.  They ended up 2nd in their group!

A big congratulations to Austin who scored the goal of the tournament.  He scored from a goal kick which was around 45 yards away!

Well done to the boys on their great start to the 2017 football campaign!  Thank you to Mr Abbas for coaching the team and for arranging their participation in the tournament.
