Dear Parents, carers and children,
This Sunday is the start of the season of Advent and the beginning of the Church year. For Christians, Advent is a four week period when we prepare, spiritually, for the arrival of Jesus. We do this through prayer and reflection; charity and good deeds. Our children will be starting their Advent topics in class and CAFOD have a very useful Advent calendar that you can download from cafod.org.uk/primary to continue this preparation at home as a family.
Next Friday is our PTA's Christmas Fair (3:00 - 5:30pm) and all our families are warmly invited to attend. There will be various stalls, a Santa's Grotto and the raffle will be drawn. It promises to be a very enjoyable event and I hope to see you there! Children are welcome to wear a Christmas jumper or festive item of clothes to school on the day.
Our PTA will be holding a final preparation meeting for the Christmas Fair on Wednesday 30th November at 9:00am. All parents who are able to assist in any way are asked to attend. I wish to take this opportunity to once again thank all our families for their generous donations and sale of raffle tickets.
Our school has entered the national Mathletics Championship and I encourage all our children to access the website for some fun and educational Maths activities. Prizes will be awarded to the top performing schools. Please see below for more details.
I am very proud of the artistic achievements of our children who entered the Westminster Winter Windows competition. I went to Leicester Square earlier in the week to see the artwork on display and it is well worth a visit! Congratulations to Stephanie, Leo and Kimberley M who were finalists in the event. Stephanie went on to win the overall title.
On the sporting front, congratulations are due to Harrison on his terrific achievement at the London Youth Games last Saturday. Well done!
I hope you have a good weekend!
Miss Clare O'Connor

NOTICES AND REMINDERS
Class 8's Assembly
Class 8 delivered a very informative assembly telling us all about their Science topic: light and dark. They showed us different experiments they have performed and shared with us the many facts they have learnt. Class 8 rounded off their assembly with a favourite hymn - 'This little light of mine.' Thank you class 8! We all enjoyed your assembly very much!
Year 3 visit the Ballet
On Wednesday Year 3 had a exciting trip out to The Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House. We were impressed by the fantastic staging and costumes and the dancing from the Royal Ballet, even the students of the Royal Ballet school. Year 3 were amazed at the skill of the musicians in the orchestra, and recognised some of the pieces that we had been listening to in class.
Westminster Winter Windows
Our school, along with schools from across Westminster, took part in the Westminster Winter Windows competition and we are extremely proud of Stephanie (yr 5) for winning the competition! Well done! Congratulations to Leo (yr 6) and Kimberley M (yr 3) for making the finals. It is wonderful that we have such talented young artists at St. Edward's! All the entries have been put on display in Leicester Square and will be available to view until the 8th January 2017.
Our school has entered the Mathletics Numeracy Challenge. This is a national maths challenge focused on students mastering curriculum activities and practicing their mental maths skills - all while getting excited and engaged with maths! Prizes are awarded for top performing schools. There is also a free Mathletics app for tablet devices that students can use to access Mathletics from anywhere. All of their activities are recorded and will be synced with their main Mathletics account. The app is available for iPad and Android tablets. For more information visit uk.mathletics.com/numeracychallenge
DISCOVERY EDUCATION ESPRESSO
Please encourage and support your children to further their learning at home (especially as we have assessments coming up) by logging onto the Espresso website which can be accessed by clicking here. Espresso is an extremely useful learning tool with subject matter relevant to what your child has been studying in class. Your child's log in can be found in the front of his/her school journal.
Thank you to all who supported the poppy appeal in support of the Royal British Legion.
London Youth Games
Last weekend Harrison represented Westminster at the London Youth Games in cross country. He competed against more than 150 children from 33 different boroughs and various athletics clubs. Harrison came first out of Westminster and 33rd overall! Well done Harrison! We are very proud of you!
